Structure fire near Murphy and Wellington (VIDEO)

A shed fire sent thick black smoke billowing into the air over south Sarnia Tuesday morning.

Sarnia firefighters, police and Lambton EMS responded to the Murphy Road area north of Wellington Street just after 9 a.m.

Fire Life Safety Educator Mike Otis said the homeowner suffered minor injuries when he spotted the fire and opened the shed door.

Otis said they were able to prevent the flames from spreading to the home, however, other nearby structures did sustain some damage.

"The shed fire started catching the neighbours garage on fire," said Otis. "Sarnia Fire and Rescue Services extinguished both the shed and the neighbour's garage and we were able to knock down the fire quickly once we arrived."

Otis says Bell and Cogeco cables were also damaged in the fire and crews were on scene making repairs.

Murphy Road was closed to traffic between London Road and Wellington Street.

A damage estimate or cause was not immediately available.
