Gladu not giving up on Bluewater Ferry rebuild

Sarnia-Lambton's MP is still fighting to rebuild Sombra's Bluewater Ferry causeway nearly a year after it was damaged by ice.

Despite being turned away by four separate federal ministers, MP Marilyn Gladu said she will not give up her fight to restore the border crossing.

The causeway's been closed indefinitely since January 2018 when the Canadian Coast Guard's Samuel Risley icebreaker escorted four freighters down the St. Clair River, causing an ice field to break free.

Gladu says after being turned away by the federal Liberals multiple times, the ferry owners had nowhere else to turn.

"At that point in time the owner of the ferry decided they had no choice but to litigate against the Coast Guard for what they consider the damages to be," said Gladu. "And while the thing is in litigation, the government obviously will do nothing. There are other solutions that are still being looked at, it's possible the Sombra ferry could be purchased by someone else and operated, but we will not give up. We will make sure that ultimately that border crossing is restored because we need it."

Gladu said the government has had every opportunity to fund repairs to the causeway, which are estimated to cost around $1.5 million to $3 million.
