City parks and rec master plan to be presented Monday

A new outdoor pool is not part of the City of Sarnia's parks, recreation and culture plan for the next 10 to 15 years.

The new master plan, a year in the making, will be presented at a special meeting of Sarnia Council at 2:30 Monday afternoon.

It's recommended Jackson Pool be decommissioned, the pools at Pathways and the YMCA be further promoted for public use, and three new community splash pads be built over the next ten years in the north and west areas of the city.

Mayor Mike Bradley said not everyone will agree.

"People on council will have items that they want to support and items they disagree with and over time we'll get to make those decisions with the input of the community," said Bradley. "For example, the elimination of Jackson Pool, I do not support that. I believe the community should have an outdoor pool that would allow young people to learn how to swim and adults to use etc. To replace it with splash pads, they're good, they're very low cost and they don't need lifeguards -- but they're not the answer to an actual swimming pool."

Bradley is encouraged to see plans to upgrade many of the city's present parks with accessible play equipment.

"One must keep in mind, this is simply a plan for council to work from. It is not mandatory. There will be issues that come and go and a lot of it is going to depend on the ability to pay and the ability to invest," he said.

Building a multi-use facility for indoor soccer and other sports and a beer garden on the St. Clair River waterfront are other recommendations being explored.
