Trucker charged after rear-end crash causes spill

A trucker from Mississauga is charged in a crash between two transport trucks on the Highway 402 approach to the Blue Water Bridge Monday morning.

Lambton OPP said the driver of a loaded transport allegedly failed to recognize that other commercial vehicles were stopped, waiting to cross into the U.S.

The truck hit another loaded transport causing a leak of hazardous material.

Aamjiwnaang First Nation Emergency Planning said a resin mixture spilled onto the highway and into a catch basin, causing concern that the St. Clair River could be impacted.

A Chemical Valley Emergency Coordinating Organization (CVECO) alert was issued and the Sarnia fire department's HAZ-MAT team and Imperial's foam truck responded to contain and clean up the spill.

The westbound lanes between Christina Street and Front Street were not fully reopened for nearly 12 hours.

There were no injuries.

The 63-year-old truck driver is charged with careless driving.
