Local teens from within the Spectrum program at Rebound want to bring some colour to downtown Sarnia.
Rebound Sarnia-Lambton Executive Director Carrie McEachran said the drop-in program is open to all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, two-spirited and questioning youth ages 12 to 24.
McEachran said the local teens want to show the city in a colourful light and are proposing a rainbow crosswalk.
"Their reasoning behind doing was not just about the LGBTQ2 community, it's about acceptance for all minorities in Sarnia because we are such an accepting city and we need to be able to show people that," said McEachran.
She said there's a petition available at Rebound at 10 Lorne Cr. in Sarnia.
"They've talked to other locations throughout Ontario like Chatham, London and Toronto to talk about the steps they took to get the rainbow crosswalks in their communities," said McEachran. "They're full force ahead, they've got their proposal ready they're just collecting petitions and hopefully will be going to city council very soon."
No date has been set for the group to take their proposal to city council. However, the youth group is hoping to have the proposed crosswalk approved and in place for Pride Month in June.
