Conditions unsafe for annual Sydenham River race, event cancelled

Sunday's annual Sydenham River Canoe and Kayak Race has been cancelled.

The St. Clair Region Conservation Authority says high water levels in the Sydenham and localized flooding has made conditions unsafe for the event.

Both the St. Clair authority and the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority have issued flood outlook bulletins.

Up to 35 millimetres of rain overnight is causing water levels to rise quickly.

Significant flooding is not expected but residents are reminded to stay clear of fast flowing watercourses and slippery, unstable banks.

This marks the second straight year the race has been cancelled due to high water levels.
