$35M Moore Sports Complex reno proposed

A $35 million renovation is proposed for the Moore Sports Complex in St. Clair Township.

Mayor Steve Arnold said the facility, with two ice pads and a pool, was built in the late 1960s and is coming to the end of its life cycle.

"We had a bunch of community groups come together and they made a recommendation to council and that was to go with a larger ice surface that would be NHL size, new dressing rooms so we can accommodate all of the accessibility components that we are faced with, plus redo the old big rink," said Arnold.

He said the south rink would be turned into a gymnasium and then they would look into replacing the pool with something bigger and more modern.

The arena is also one of the last in the province to have a direct ammonia cooling system, which has the pungent gas flow through pipes beneath the ice surface.

"We want to upgrade the cooling system and we want to go to an indirect ammonia system like everybody else around the community does have," said Arnold.

Arnold said a fundraiser has been hired and they plan to apply for provincial and federal grants in late summer or early fall.
