UPDATE: Heavy rain expected in Sarnia-Lambton

A severe thunderstorm warning has been issued for Sarnia-Lambton.

Environment Canada said conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and heavy rain. Thunderstorms were forecast to develop late Tuesday afternoon or early Tuesday evening.

The weather agency said the main concern with the thunderstorms was heavy rainfall accumulations of 50 mm per hour and strong wind gusts to 90 km/h.

Environment Canada said lightning kills and injures Canadians every year, and reminds people that 'when thunder roars, go indoors!'

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management has recommended that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

The weather agency issued a special weather statement Tuesday morning, saying rainfall amounts between 20 to 40 millimetres were possible, with even higher amounts in storm activity.
