Man barricades himself in Bayside Centre bathroom

A man barricaded himself inside of a bathroom in the Bayside Centre Thursday afternoon.

Sarnia police responded to the mall for reports of a disturbance at around 1 p.m.

They said an officer approached the suspect but was struck in the face, causing bruising.

It's alleged the suspect ran from police and locked himself inside of the bathroom at the Ontario Shared Services Centre. The suspect allegedly told officers he had a gun and a knife and threatened to harm himself and officers.

The centre was evacuated and staff and visitors were unable to return for about 90 minutes while police spoke with the man.

Officers were able to finally enter the bathroom, and the man was tasered and taken into custody. He was taken to the hospital for mental health assessment.

The incident is still under investigation and charges are pending. There was minor damage to the bathroom.

No gun or knife was found and no other people, officers or civilians were hurt.
