Sanders wants Enbridge Line 5 shut down

Another high profile American politician is calling for Enbridge's pipeline between Superior, Wisconsin and Sarnia to be shut down.

Vermont Senator and Democratic U.S. presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders tweeted Thursday that Line 5 should be decommissioned and any new fossil fuel infrastructure should be banned.

Line 5, built in 1953, carries oil and natural gas liquids beneath the Straits of Mackinac to industries in Sarnia and elsewhere in the province and Quebec.

Enbridge has proposed building a new $500 million, 6.4-kilometre tunnel under the straits to replace the controversial existing line but Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is opposed.

The state’s attorney general filed a lawsuit in June to decommission the controversial pipeline, and also asked the court to dismiss Enbridge’s lawsuit seeking to enforce an agreement with former governor Rick Synder to replace the line.

Elected officials in Sarnia-Lambton sent a letter to the Michigan governor in June urging the state to keep the line open.
