Indecent assault charge against Sarnia doctor stayed

Legal proceedings against a Sarnia doctor charged in an alleged sexual assault nearly four decades ago, have been halted.

A charge of indecent assault against Dr. Kunwar Singh was stayed in the Ontario Court of Justice at the request of the Crown Tuesday morning.

Staying the charge means prosecution has been discontinued but could be "brought back to life" within one year of the day it's stayed.

Legal counsel for the 76-year-old Singh appeared on his behalf at the Sarnia courthouse.

Dr. Singh was arrested and charged in December in connection with an alleged incident involving a 15-year-old female, during an assessment at a doctor’s office in 1982.

The alleged victim is now 52.
