Province investing $1.4M in area farms

The Ontario government is making a significant investment in 57 area farms.

The province has partnered with the federal government to put $1.4 million into food safety measures under the $10.8 million Canadian Agricultural Partnership program.

Lambton-Kent-Middlesex MPP Monte McNaughton said there are three main initiatives.

The money will be spent on grain cleaners to reduce pests, a confinement area for sick animals, and a continuous rinse system to limit the risk of contamination.

McNaughton said he can't specify what farms are getting money due to privacy reasons, however, he added that the funds will help farmers succeed while boosting innovation, productivity and competitiveness for the sector.

Since June 2018, both the federal and provincial governments have supported nearly 1,900 projects through the partnership to help eligible Ontario farmers, processors, businesses and sector organizations innovate and grow.
