The weather was ideal as Huron Oaks welcomed dozens of golfers Thursday for The Mike Weir Par 3 Challenge For Mental Health.
The event generated $336,000 toward construction of an Access Open Minds Centre for struggling youth in the community.
TSN golf analyst Bob Weeks was on hand to introduce the Bright's Grove native to a large crowd.
The eight-time PGA Tour winner and 2003 Masters champion is thrilled to be back on his hometown course where his career began.
"It's a great feeling," said Weir. "There are a lot of familiar faces for sure and a lot of people that have put this all together. You know, it just makes me feel really proud that the community has gotten behind this, and the support we've received is just amazing."
Weir said the cause is a special one to him.
"My niece and nephew told me about a few people that they knew that have had some real struggles and, unfortunately, a couple that have committed suicide. So, it's a real concern, a real crisis. I knew there needed to be something done. There isn't a facility for the kids, so we need to get it going."
The Mike Weir Foundation has pledged to match donations up to $200,000 for the centre to serve youth aged 11 to 25.
Weir is hopeful the overall campaign will generate over $500,000.
