Thunderstorms develop in autumn heat

As expected severe thunderstorms developed in Tuesday afternoon's heat and humidity.

Environment Canada's severe thunderstorm watch was elevated to a warning for about an hour as storms rumbled across the region from west to east.

The weather agency said the storms will quickly track across southern Ontario through the afternoon and evening. Heavy rain, strong wind gusts, hail and lightning are the main threats. Remember some severe storms can produce tornadoes. Local rainfall totals of 50 millimetres, two inches, are possible by early Wednesday. The temperature at Chris Hadfield Airport had risen to 28 C, 82 F, with a humidex of 36 C before the storms came. The record high temperature for Sarnia for October 1 is 29 C, set in 1980. Winds will shift north-northeasterly Wednesday with the temperature dropping off to 12 C, 54 F.
