Sarnia honours veterans at Remembrance Day service

On Monday we remember the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace.

A large crowd gathered in wet and snowy conditions at Sarnia's Veterans Park for the Remembrance Day service.

The colour party left the Royal Canadian Legion on Front St. at 10:30 a.m. for the customary march through the downtown to the park.

The first wreath was laid by Memorial Cross Mother Pat Poland whose son Corporal Brent Poland was killed in Afghanistan.

Reverend Dr. Gord Simmons delivered the November 11 address.

"Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called children of God," said Reverend Simmons. "As we gather here on this day, remember all of those who gave their lives and service to this country in freedom. We remember also the families of those that were left behind and those who came home wounded in mind, body, and spirit. As you remember, we must never forget."

This year's ceremony included the unveiling of 26 names recently added to the Sarnia Cenotaph.

Posters sharing the stories of the previously forgotten can be viewed by the public upstairs at the Legion at 286 Front St. N.
