Record highs possible Christmas, Boxing Day

Sarnia's standing record high temperatures will be threatened this Christmas week.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Sherry Williams said we're in the midst of a mild spell.

"The jet stream is a little farther north so we're getting into some more southerly air," said Williams. "So it's just the regime that is happening right now in North America."

Conditions were also very mild around Christmas time in 2015.

While the temperature reached 11 C (52 F) Monday afternoon at Chris Hadfield Airport, it was still well short of the record of 15.6 C set for the date in 2015.

New marks could be reached or equalled Christmas Day and Boxing Day though.

A high near 10 C (50 F) is forecast for December 25 with the record high for the date at 7.3 C set in 2015. Environment Canada's Tuesday afternoon forecast was calling for a high of 7 C (45 F) on December 26 with the record at 7 C set in 2014.

The normal high for this time of year in Sarnia is -1 C (30 F). -With files from Josh Boyce
