Public elementary teachers threaten to escalate job action

Public elementary teachers are promising increasingly disruptive job action effective February 3 if a new central agreement with the province is not reached by Friday.

The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO) announced Monday that one-day rotating strikes will continue for the third week, and there'll be a full province-wide strike by all members Thursday, February 6.

Unless a deal is reached, the Lambton Kent District School Board will be shut down this Thursday, January 30 and next Tuesday, February 4, due to rotating walkouts, and again February 6 by the planned full strike by ETFO's 83,000 members.

In Monday's announcement, ETFO President Sam Hammond challenged Education Minister Stephen Lecce to send his negotiators back to the table to address the key issues.

The union said fair contract talks must include appropriate funding for Special Education, a strategy to address classroom violence, maintaining the Kindergarten program, fair hiring practices, class sizes that meet the needs of elementary students, and compensation that keeps up with inflation.
