Record number of paczkis sold

Sarnia-Lambton residents certainly indulged themselves on Fat Tuesday.

Global Donuts on London Line surpassed its previous record of paczkis sold on the day, according to owner Gus Pantazis.

"The previous record was close to 2,000 dozen," said Pantazis. "I haven't completely tallied it, but doing a rough count and the bags that are left over, I'm going to estimate that it's just slightly over that this year."

He said his staff were borderline miraculous.

"We came close to selling out in the afternoon around 5 p.m., but the machines I have in here, Nick and his team were right on it," he said. "They just kept making the ones we were short of and we caught up around 8 p.m., and they worked until midnight because we had to make them for Wednesday as well as advertised."

Paczkis are eaten as part of the Shrove Tuesday feast in advance of 40 days of Lent which started Wednesday.
