Seniors who need help paying for prescription medication will be getting some relief during the pandemic.
On Wednesday, the Ontario Ministry of Health announced a couple of changes to the Ontario Drug Benefit Program (ODBP), which is geared toward residents aged 65 and older.
Effective immediately, residents using the ODBP will not have to make a co-payment for any prescription issued for 30 days or more and dispensed in installments. This break is in effect until at least July 1.
In addition, new and existing households in the Trillium Drug Program can apply for a household income reassessment to help curb the financial hardship during the pandemic.
If a Trillium Drug Program household has experienced an income change of 10 per cent or more this year or in 2019, as compared to their 2018 income, they can apply to have their deductible recalculated by completing and submitting the form available on the official Ontario government website.
Health Minister Christine Elliott said changes to the drug program will make sure those depending on prescriptions will not have to worry about the expense during this time.
"During these unprecedented times, our government is doing everything we can to provide additional relief for vulnerable people impacted by COVID-19," said Elliott. "That's why we are taking action to help ensure Ontarians continue to have access to the prescription drugs they need, without it being a source of stress or financial burden during the outbreak."
The ministry has reminded residents that to be sure pharmacies have an adequate supply of a variety of medications, prescriptions are being filled in 30-day increments, with some exceptions. Anyone needing a refill should phone it into their pharmacy at least 10 days before the medication runs out, and inquire about delivery options if the patient is unable to pick the prescription up themselves.
