Special weather statement calls for heavy rainfall

Those hoping to spend the holiday weekend outdoors may have to change their plans. Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for most of southwestern Ontario on Saturday.

A system moving in on Sunday has the potential to bring heavy rainfall that could last until early Tuesday. Precipitation amounts between 30-60 millimetres are expected with locally higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Heavy rain and strong winds have the potential to cause localized flooding to low lying areas. Residents are advised to exercise caution and to keep children and pets away from waterways as cold, fast-moving water can be hazardous.

Meanwhile, a rainfall warning was issued on Sunday morning for Elgin County, Simcoe, Norfolk County, Oxford County and County of Brant.
