UPDATE: Rail cars jump tracks in Sarnia

Four rail cars came off the tracks in Sarnia early Friday morning.

City Emergency Management Coordinator Ron RealeSmith said CN Rail notified the Sarnia Dispatch Centre of the derailment in the Modeland and Plank roads area at around 3:30 a.m.

"Four cars were involved and they were carrying LPG propane. There was no leaks and never any risk to the community, simply the wheels came off the track -- the root cause of that is still under investigation and crews are now on-site and they are moving the trains back onto the track."

RealeSmith said no injuries were reported and the investigation into the derailment continues.

The Chemical Valley Emergency Coordinating Organization issued a Code 8 alert but the media and general public are no longer routinely apprised of those.

CN responded to Blackburn News via email Friday evening and confirmed there was a minor derailment involving four cars in the Sarnia Rail Yard. The rail company, however, said there were no loaded dangerous goods cars involved and no threat to public safety.
