Hundreds of pandemic-weary residents enjoy 'Rocking the Runway'

Applause was in the form of car horns at what organizers are calling a very successful "Rocking the Runway" over the weekend in Sarnia.

Tourism Sarnia-Lambton Executive Director Mark Perrin said about 170 vehicles drove onto the tarmac at Chris Hadfield Airport for Friday night's concert featuring The Reklaws, and Saturday night was a 200-vehicle sell-out for Big Wreck.

"Overall everyone was very positive and happy," said Perrin. "I think it depended a little bit on what your expectations were, but just having something to go to and attend in what's been an awful year of 2020 was fantastic. To get people out and bring back live music and having these type of shows again, we're getting a lot of thank you's and it's just what people needed, and comments like that."

Perrin said other cities and provinces have reached out, asking for feedback on the event.

He said despite stormy weather that included a tornado watch Friday, the community impact was very positive.

"All the spinoffs, whether it's economic or mental health obviously having these things is good for everyone and everyone wins," he said.

Those attending had to remain in their vehicles which were spaced to ensure social distancing.

The Kinsmen Club of Sarnia was also on site selling drive-in style food and drinks, raising money for local food banks.
