A Sarnia man has been sentenced to ten years in prison for killing another man over an argument about the purchase of pot.
Matthew Theriault pleaded guilty in November, 2020 to manslaughter in the stabbing death of Jesse Mowat-Caudle in a violent altercation near Maxwell Street and St. Vincent Street in April 2019.
Theriault's enhanced credit for pre-sentence custody is worth two years, eight months, which means he has seven years, and four months of his sentence left to serve.
He was originally charged with second degree murder but pleaded guilty late last year, in the Superior Court of Justice, to the lesser charge of manslaughter.
Court was told that Theriault, who was 30 at the time, got into an argument with Mowat-Caudle over the purchase of marijuana the afternoon of April 17, 2019. The two left a residence and as the argument continued outside on Maxwell Street, Theriault stabbed Caudle twice with a kitchen knife. Caudle died in London hospital early the next morning.
Theriault told police he was acting in self-defence and didn't intend to hurt Caudle.
