The executive director of Sarnia-Lambton's Children's Aid Society says cases being referred to the agency are the most serious she's seen in 25 years.
Dawn Flegel told Sue Storr on CHOK (103.9 FM, 1070 AM) referrals dropped by about 40 per cent during the pandemic's first lockdown, but needs and stress levels increased.
"Kids weren't being seen by schools or by other service providers, or other family members. At the same time, all of that stress went up and the needs went up. Now we're seeing, in this second lockdown period, probably the worst levels of trauma and seriousness with kids and families that I've seen in my career."
Flegel said many families are under tremendous pressure.
"We're more socially isolated right now, and fewer in-person services are available for kids and families. Parents and caregivers are trying to juggle online school, and working from home. Some families have been impacted by lower incomes where there have been job losses or layoffs. All of that is cumulative and we're certainly seeing quite severe impacts."
Flegel urges those needing help to reach out. She said despite being in lockdown, there are people who can help.
