Frigid temperatures prompt cold alert

Lambton’s medical officer of health has issued the first cold weather alert of the winter season for Sarnia-Lambton.

The mercury is forecast to drop to -16 C (3 F) Tuesday night, with wind chill values in the -13 to -21 range into Wednesday morning.

Lambton Public Health said overexposure to cold temperatures can be hazardous and can even lead to frostbite and hypothermia.

Residents are reminded to limit time spent outdoors and to dress in layers, especially shielding exposed areas from the wind such as head, neck and face.

Local agencies providing shelter and assistance to the homeless are advised to prepare for an increase in demand.

The alert is expected to remain in effect until tomorrow morning.
