No wrongdoing in police response to Petrolia suicide: SIU

The province's police watchdog has ruled no charges will be laid against police, in connection with a Petrolia man's death last fall.

On October 26, 2020, Lambton OPP responded to a call about a 40-year-old man in distress, armed with a gun and threatening suicide.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said officers attended the scene and located the man inside a barn, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.

The man was taken to hospital, but died from his injuries on November 1.

SIU Director Joseph Martino determined there's no reasonable grounds to believe any officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident.

The SIU is a civilian agency that investigates incidents involving police where there has been a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
