One of the last derelict city-owned buildings could be torn down within the next few months.
Germain Park Arena was closed in July 2015, after 42 years in operation, and on Monday city council will consider tenders for its demolition.
Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley said there's been no upkeep or maintenance at the building since it closed and it's considered past its end of life.
"The building should have been demolished when it was first closed six or seven years ago," said Bradley. "It has been gutted and two councils have given direction to demolish it. The bid is coming to council this Monday and I would expect council to say let's move forward and focus on some of the new things that we're looking at for the future, as it relates to recreational facilities."
Bradley said the property at Germain Park has lots of potential.
"I can't go into a lot of detail, but I can say there's some very exciting things going to happen around that area, the Strangway Centre and Jackson Pool in the next few months," he said. "So one building may be dying and going away, but there will be other new facilities coming forward that I think the community will be very, very pleased with."
It's recommended council approve a submission by Salandria Ltd. of Richmond Hill for the demolition project.
Council will also consider approving funds for a feasibility study, for an indoor multi-purpose recreation facility during its virtual meeting at 10 a.m. Monday.
