Sarnia councillor suggests Canatara Beach lifeguard building be replaced

A Sarnia councillor thinks replacement of the 60-year-old lifeguard office and washrooms at Canatara Beach is well overdue.

Bill Dennis posted the idea on his Facebook page, and said he has received a lot of positive feedback.

Community members have been in contact with him to see if anything can be done.

Dennis said he'd like to see something similar to what they have in Grand Bend.

"I've been to that facility in Grand Bend, it's beautiful, it's lovely," said Dennis. "It has a second storey observation deck and, quite frankly, our view would be spectacular. I know a lot of people would probably love seeing beautiful sunsets, there's a lot of people that are very interested in photography, imagine getting some beautiful shots off of that."

Dennis said other amenities could include a concession stand, or a north facing patio to enjoy the sunset.

He believes tourism is going to play a huge part in the post-pandemic recovery, and the city should be prepared.

"Other communities have done a better job with the assets that they have," he said. "They would give their left arm to have what we have, the natural assets. That's a Blue Flag beach that we have there, but we have to do more with it."

Dennis has been in contact with city staff, and he's been told it's on their radar.
