Sarnia police issue warning about telephone scam

The Sarnia Police Service is again warning residents to be vigilant after reports of another telephone scam.

Police said a person received an early-morning phone call, advising their bank account had fraudulent activity.

The scammers said they needed account information, and also asked the victim to download a program that would assist with securing accounts. The complainant unplugged her computer after the scammers took it over and she contacted her bank to freeze her accounts and credit cards.

Police said no money was taken, and the victim contacted other agencies such as TransUnion and Equifax to ensure no transactions were conducted.

Police urge everyone to be very cautious when receiving such telephone calls. Residents should hang up if the caller is asking for sensitive information, and contact the bank to verify.
