Sarnia welcoming return of outdoor rec programing

Outdoor rec activities are back in season in the city of Sarnia.

Registration is now open for a wide variety of adult programs, some of which begin on Monday.

City Superintendent of Recreation Shelley Kern said registration has been great so far and that programs are filling up fast.

"Some of our programs are near full, other ones there's still spots left.  So registration is going to remain open right through July and August, and the programs, some of them even run until the end of September, so hopefully the weather cooperates for us."

Kern said fitness programs include yoga classes, belly dancing, fun fit, pickleball and a number of other activities at Germain Park.  The city is also offering some more laid-back programs.

"Meditation in the garden, we're doing some discussion groups, like current events and men's morning.  We also have tai chi and qi gong, so some of the ones that are basically safe to do outdoors."

Kern said it's been a while since the city was able to offer these types of activities.

"We were actually able to offer indoor programing November and December of 2020 and then we did shut down.  Our last day of regular, pre-pandemic programing was Friday, March 13, so it's been a long time coming," said Kern.  "We've been doing virtual programs in some of the areas that we've been able to do over Zoom, but of course, people want to see each other, they want to get together and be outdoors, and this was a great opportunity to introduce these programs again."

Kern said registration is for those aged 20-plus and is mandatory for all programs.
