Aging Colborne Road water main ruptures

A section of Colborne Road was under water after a large water main break Thursday afternoon.

Sarnia's Director of Engineering David Jackson said they were notified of an issue at about 5:30 p.m.

"The water treatment plant called us to say pressures were dropping in the system, which means there's a large break somewhere, and we figured out it was the large main on Colborne Road that broke," said Jackson.

He said the 20 inch trunk water main has been a problem in the past.

"The truck main that runs along Colborne Road there it's about 70 years old and it's a cast iron main so it's getting to the end of its life, so we have experienced a number of breaks on that stretch of road over the last few years," he said. "In general, a break of this size, it will likely cost us close to $20,000 in the end. We have crews go out on overtime to deal with it and ones of this size we'll often bring in a contractor to help us with the restoration just to get it done quicker."

He said the quick response by work crews reduced any significant property damage due to flooding.

Jackson said it's expected the road will remain closed to traffic between Exmouth Street and Rosedale Avenue into Friday night while repairs are completed.
