Sarnia manor receives new trishaw bike

Marshall Gowland Manor residents now have a new activity they can enjoy as they get out into the community again.

General Manager of Long-Term Care Jane Joris said a $9,400 trishaw bike was recently purchased through a donation made to the Manor’s Auxiliary from Imperial.

Joris said trishaw bikes have been in use at two other county homes so it's nice to have one now for the Sarnia manor.

"We were able to get donations for a bike at North Lambton Lodge and Lambton Meadowview Villa over the past couple of years but we didn't have one at the manor yet," she said. "We have had a partnership with Sarnia Imperial site for a while and one of the things we had asked them was to help us with this bicycle … We're really appreciative of the donation."

The bike accommodates two passengers, including those with reduced mobility. Joris said it's a great way for residents to go outdoors in a safe manner.

"People have been on the property for many, many months and not able to just get out and see what's new in the neighbourhood and enjoy themselves in a safe and accessible manner," she said.

Imperial Chemical Plant Manager Kimberly Haas said the company hopes the trishaw bike will contribute to residents' mental well-being as the pandemic has led to feeling of isolation.

Recreation and Leisure staff have been trained as "pilots" to provide rides to residents. However, Joris said they hope youth members will volunteer for the position in the near future once COVID-19 restrictions ease and volunteers are permitted into the home again.

"We would want to make sure that the person understands the rules of the road and they're physically able to ride the bike -- although it does have a small motor. It does take some physical work to pilot but there is some help with that."

Trained "pilots" are expected to start offering rides in early August. Those interested in volunteering are asked to contact the county at volunteer@county-lambton.on.ca.

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Wednesday where residents enjoyed a ride on the new bike and some ice cream from Dips Soft Serve.
