Sarnia Saints open rugby season Saturday

The Sarnia Saints men's and women's rugby teams will be playing their first games of the season on Saturday.

The action kicks off at 1:30 p.m. at Norm Perry Park, as the women face the Hamilton Hornets. The men's game will follow shortly after.

Women's captain Jamie Holmes is excited to get started, especially after last season was cancelled due to COVID-19.

"We're expecting it to be a pretty interesting game," said Holmes. "It's their first game too since 2019 so it should be fun. It will be just a friendly match to get the girls back onto the field, into contact, and back into the swing of things. I think it'll be a fun game."

Holmes said there are a lot of new faces on the team this year, including a few girls from high school.

Former Saint and Olympian Julia Greenshields, who has been helping out with the squad, will be holding a meet and greet after the game and there will be a raffle for signed Olympic merchandise.
