A young Lambton county golfer says winning the Junior Boys Club Championship at Sarnia Golf and Curling Club is one of his biggest accomplishments in the sport so far.
Liam Crummy, 17, shot an even par 72 during the one-day August event to win the Club C by eight strokes.
Crummy, who lives just outside Oil Springs, told Blackburn News that his mindset going into the day was "whatever happens, happens.... just go out there and have fun, and play for par."
He said that his game has gotten a lot better over the past few months.
"What I need to work on the most is my mental game -- after hitting a bad shot, just recouping and hitting a good shot. I'm also working on my short game and dialing-in my wedges."
Crummy, who currently has a four handicap, is hoping to play the sport at the postsecondary level in the states.
The Grade 12 student from LCCVI said he will go wherever golf takes him, adding that it would be great if he got his amateur status some day.
"I started playing golf in about 2015 when my dad bought me a set of garage sale clubs. I try to get out about three to four times a week between my two jobs. On the off days that I don't play, I hit the range and work on fundamentals," he said. "What really drew me in is when I got a hole-in-one when I was 12 at Bear Creek in Oil Springs... yeah, that really got me hooked on it."
Crummy credited his improved golf swing and the fine tuning of his game to his coach, Chris Dickson. The two have been working together for the past two years.
Crummy is also entering his final year of minor hockey. He played for East Lambton last year and is playing for Petrolia this year.
