Driver tries to evade police during traffic stop

Sarnia police say a suspect tried to evade officers during an attempted traffic stop on Sunday morning.

At around 2:50 a.m., police spotted a vehicle that failed to stop at stop signs at Richard and Stuart Streets, and again at Stuart and Talfourd Street. It's alleged the vehicle continued at a high rate of speed before pulling into a driveway on Stuart Street.

An officer tried to block the car in, but the suspect allegedly ignored his commands and drove across the lawn to escape, causing ruts in the ground.

The officer was able to take down the licence plate number and tracked the vehicle to a home in the 100 block of Forsyth Street. The driver was arrested without further incident.

A 29-year-old Sarnia man is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from a peace officer, failing to comply with a release order, failing to comply with probation order, and mischief under $5,000.

The accused was being held in custody pending a bail hearing.
