While Remembrance Day has come and gone this year, members of the Sarnia-Lambton community continue to show support for veterans.
Small rocks featuring painted red poppies and the words "Remember Them" were recently left at the Sarnia Cenotaph at Veterans Park.
Legion Branch 62 President Les Jones said the rocks have been showing up over the past year now at various times.
"People have left them at the Legion main entrance, they've left them at the cenotaph at the Legion, and of course at the cenotaph at Veterans Park as well," said Jones. "It's very encouraging to see people take some time to paint these rocks and drop them off to show that they truly do remember."
Jones said there are too many of the rocks to count at this point, adding that they show up periodically, especially around Remembrance Day. He said there are numerous people in the community who paint and display the rocks.
"Some they come and they go, but it seems to be an ongoing thing," he said. "We're very lucky in this community that our citizens, they do remember -- that was quite evident during our latest Remembrance Day service at the cenotaph."
The annual service retuned to Veterans Park this year after it was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic.
"Just the number of people that attend that, and the number of people that support the Legion and our poppy campaign each year -- it's very obvious to us at the Legion that people do care about veterans, and people do remember the sacrifices that people have made in the past."
