Council to address Lakeshore Road parking

Parking along a section of Lakeshore Road in Sarnia has become a problem and the city is being asked to do something about it.

Sarnia council will consider a bylaw to restrict parking, between Murphy Road and Telfer Road, when it meets virtually on Monday.

Mayor Mike Bradley said they've received several complaints, because it forces pedestrians onto the road.

"The county made some major improvements to Lakeshore and the city has in the past on the portion that we are responsible for," said Bradley. "What's happened, by putting in areas where people can bike and walk, now people are parking in those areas and that's not what that was all about."

Bradley said active transportation has to be safe and it can't be impaired by vehicles parked in those spots.

"If you look at most of the properties along Lakeshore Road, you can easily make the case that there's lots of areas to park in the driveways that exist all along Lakeshore."

Reconstruction of Lakeshore Road between Modeland Road and Telfer was completed in two phases, as a joint project between the city and County of Lambton, in 2020 and 2021.
