Sarnia police arrest alleged drunk driver

An alleged impaired driver, who tried to avoid police by walking away following a traffic stop, has been charged.

Sarnia police said a member of the traffic unit saw a vehicle speed up to an intersection in the area of Talfourd Street and East Street Thursday afternoon, around 3:35 p.m.

The driver reportedly tried to stop at the intersection but was unable to and instead allegedly rolled through and drove away at a high rate of speed.

The officer conducted a traffic stop in the area of Talfourd Street and Russell Street. However, police said the driver started to walk away before the officer could get out of the cruiser in an alleged attempt to avoid police.

The officer caught up to the driver and suspected him of driving while impaired.

A 24-year-old Sarnia man was arrested and taken to police headquarters. Police said the level of alcohol in the accused's blood was over twice the legal limit.

The driver was charged with one count of being impaired by alcohol while operating a motor vehicle and one count of having a blood alcohol concentration of 80 plus. He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
