An impatient driver that didn't wait for a traffic light to turn green, is now facing drug trafficking charges.
At around 3:15 a.m. Thursday, Sarnia police were in the area of Russell Street and Wellington Street when they spotted a vehicle take off from the intersection before the stop light turned green.
When officers attempted to catch up to the vehicle, it pulled into a laneway in the 100 block of Russell Street, where two occupants got out and proceeded to run through backyards and jump fences.
Other officers were dispatched to the area to assist in locating the two individuals. Police said a male and female matching the description of the suspects were found in the area of Cromwell Street attempting to enter a taxi. They were arrested without further incident.
Police said the male suspect was shortly thereafter transported to hospital due to the fact that he may have swallowed an unknown quantity of an alleged drug while fleeing from police in an effort to destroy the evidence. The accused remains in hospital and is being monitored to ensure his well-being.
Police said a total of 12.6 grams of crack cocaine was recovered, along with other evidence, and a replica handgun.
Jeremy Joseph Spinks, 34, and Alysha Yvonne Dewey, 29, both from Sarnia, each face one count of possession of a schedule one substance for the purpose of trafficking, and one count of unauthorized possession of a weapon.
Spinks faces additional charges of one count of failing to comply with a release order, and possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a prohibition order.
Both suspects will remain in custody pending a bail hearing.
