Traffic stop leads to drug charge against Sarnia cyclist

A Sarnia cyclist, stopped by police for having no light on his bike, is now facing charges of drug possession and resisting arrest.

Police conducted a traffic stop of the male cyclist in the area of Cameron Street and Palmerston Street at around 1:30 a.m. Sunday. When asked to identify himself, police said the suspect gave a name and date of birth that did not return with any information when queried.

When the officers pointed out that the man had a wallet in his back pocket, the suspect tried to run from police but was grabbed onto and arrested following a struggle.

A search of the man located a small quantity of methamphetamine and an Ontario driver’s licence that identified the accused as a 38-year-old from Sarnia who was also wanted on outstanding warrants.

The accused faces one count of possession of a schedule one substance, one count of public mischief, and one count of resisting a peace officer. He was being held in custody pending a bail hearing.
