Frigid temperatures prompt cold alert

For the second time in a week, a cold weather alert has been issued for Sarnia-Lambton.

The mercury is forecast to drop to -17 C, 1 F Tuesday night, and -16 C, 3 Far Wednesday night, with wind chill values in the -20 C to -25 range.

Lambton Public Health said overexposure to cold temperatures can be hazardous and may lead to frostbite and hypothermia.

The health unit advises residents to take precautions by dressing in layers, shielding exposed areas including your head, neck and face from the cold and by limiting time spent outdoors, especially at night.

Local agencies that provide shelter and assistance to homeless individuals are asked to prepare for an increase in demand.

A cold weather alert is issued when either the temperature drops below -15 C, 5 F without a wind chill value, Environment Canada issues a wind chill warning or extreme weather conditions, such as a blizzard, are predicted.

The latest alert will be in effect until Thursday, January 27.
