New Oil Springs groundhog to make spring prediction Wednesday

It's Groundhog Day on Wednesday, and a new weather prognosticator will be making his spring prediction at Heaven's Wildlife Rescue in Oil Springs.

Groundhog Harvey, who learned the ropes from Oil Springs Ollie last year, will be letting residents know whether to expect an early spring.

Oil Springs Ollie unfortunately passed away last April at eight years old.

Heaven's Wildlife Owner Peggy Jenkins said Ollie is missed.

"He went everywhere, from Oil Springs to Sarnia," said Jenkins. "He did a lot of educational things. When Groundhog Day would end up on a weekday, we would go to all of the different schools and do the prediction there. We'd also do an educational presentation for the kids on groundhogs."

According to folklore, if a groundhog sees its shadow on February 2, it will retreat into its burrow, heralding six more weeks of cold weather.

Jenkins said Ollie was always pretty accurate with his predictions and is hoping Harvey will keep up the good work.

We'll have an update after Harvey's prediction sometime after 8 a.m.
