Ice Fishing Derby returns 'with a twist'

Members of the Bluewater Anglers are hoping families have fun ice fishing over the long weekend through a virtual event.

The Bluewater Angles Ice Fishing Derby will not be held in typical fashion out on the Sarnia Bay due to gatherings size limits. However, the event will be held virtually where participants can post a picture of their catch to Facebook for a chance to win one of three $50 gift certificates to The Outdoorsman.

Paul Heckley of the Bluewater Anglers board of directors said the event hasn't been held since 2018 because of unsafe conditions for ice fishing. He said now that the ice is stable, they're excited to hold the event, even if it is "with a twist".

"It's really intended to just be a fun event for families to get out on the long weekend," he said.

Canadian residents can fish in Ontario for free, without a fishing licence, over the Family Day weekend.

Heckley said the derby is open to anyone fishing in the area.

Each participant who posts a picture to the Bluewater Angler's Facebook page will have their name entered into the draw once.

Three random draws will take place and Heckley said the winners will be notified through their Facebook in the days following February 21.
