Sarnia church to hold service for Ukraine

A service will be held at St. George's Ukrainian Catholic Church in Sarnia on Sunday, in support of those impacted by Russia's invasion.

Russian troops invaded Ukraine earlier this week.

The local church has shared messages and prayers for Ukraine on its website.

Father Bohdan Winnicki said they plan to hold a public service in the parking lot of the Rosedale Avenue church beginning at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a third set of severe sanctions against Russia and its president on Friday.

"We will be imposing sanctions on President Putin and his fellow architects of this barbaric war, his chief of staff, and foreign minister," said Trudeau. "I am confirming Canada's support to remove Russia from the SWIFT payment system, a critical part of the global banking system."

Trudeau also said the federal government will match donations, up to $10 million, to the Canadian Red Cross' Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal.
