'Sailors Church' marks start of shipping season, virtually

The Annual Mariners' Service will again be held virtually Sunday.

The interfaith service at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Point Edward is held the first Sunday in March, marking the start of the shipping season on the Great Lakes.

From 1868 to 1902, the church's tall, tin steeple reflected light from the Fort Gratiot lighthouse in Port Huron to help ships navigate from Lake Huron into the St. Clair River, giving it the nickname the Sailor's Church.

St. Paul's moved from the corner of Livingston Street and Victoria Street to its current location at 210 Michigan Ave. in 1902.

Sunday's online service will be available on Facebook and YouTube beginning at 7 a.m.
