Fire causes closure of Corunna Catholic school

St. Joseph Catholic School in Corunna will be closed Monday after a fire broke out at the site at around 6 a.m.

Principal Colleen Cogghe said in an email that the fire started in a custodial room in the centre of the school and that the school corridor filled with smoke and set off the sprinkler system.

Cogghe said because classroom doors were closed, damage at this time appears to be isolated to the corridor.

An environmental restoration company has been contacted to eradicate the odour of smoke from the building and test the air quality, to ensure the building is safe for students and staff to occupy.

Teachers will connect with students Monday morning using classroom technology, for voluntary asynchronous learning opportunities.

Cogghe said an update will be provided later in the day.

St. Clair Township Fire Chief Richard Boyes said the call came in at around 6 a.m. and the cause is believed to be an overheated fan.
