A service will be held on Tuesday to mark an important milestone at the cenotaph in the Village of Point Edward.
Vice President of the Point Edward Ex-Servicemen’s Association Gary Capp said a service to mark the cenotaph's 100th anniversary will be open to members of the community. The event will start at 5 p.m.
"I hope people do come down so that they may learn a little information about the cenotaph and how it was put there 100 years ago," he said.
Capp said the cenotaph was dedicated on April 18, 1922, after Lord Julian Byng, former governor general of Canada and Vimy Ridge war hero, and Lady Byng visited Point Edward.
Due to many offices being closed for Easter Monday, Capp said they opted to hold a service on Tuesday instead. He said the idea to host a ceremony started over a year ago with support from the Village of Point Edward.
The service will include local MPs and MPPs, Point Edward Mayor Bev Hand, Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley, and Lambton County Warden Kevin Marriott. Capp said a few of the invited guests will say a few words and each will lay a wreath.
"Sarnia Legion Branch 62 has lent us their flag bearers and we have the legion pipe band as well. We'll do an honour roll presentation of all the names that are on the cenotaph," said Capp. "I'm going to give a brief outline of the actual meaning of a cenotaph and how it actually came about."
Following Tuesday's service, the Ex-Servicemen’s Association will have another milestone to look forward to in a few years.
"In 2026, the Point Edward Ex-Servicemen’s Association will be 100 years old so we will be celebrating our centennial in four years time."
The club is open to anyone who wants to join and an annual membership costs $25. Capp also said functions put on by the association are open to non-members, there would just be a fee to enter events.
