Applications being accepted for Walker Scholarship

Point Edward residents heading into post secondary studies have until the beginning of May to apply for the Walker Family Scholarship.

Applications are being accepted until May 2 at noon.

The village's Chief Administrative Officer Jim Burns said there will be two recipients of the scholarship, in memory of Maynard and Rene Walker, this year.

"In the past it's been one $10,000 USD scholarship," said Burns. "They've now changed it to two $5,000 scholarships just to spread the scholarship around a little bit more."

Recipients will get $2,500 a year for two years, providing a C average is maintained in the first year of studies.

Burns said interested students can email him at jburns@villageofpointedward.com for an application, or contact the municipal office at 519-337-3021.

Maynard Walker was a lifelong resident of Point Edward and was a member of the volunteer fire department for 35 years. He served as chief from 1956 to 1979.

His wife, Rene, was an active member of the Point Edward Presbyterian Church congregation.

The scholarship, now in its sixth year, was created by their daughter Mary Ellen Walker who now lives in the United States.
