City crews responded to the break on Michigan Avenue, east of Murphy Road, at around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.
To minimize the impact on businesses and a nursing home nearby, the repair is scheduled to be completed Wednesday night.
Michigan Avenue westbound is closed and eastbound is reduced to a single lane from Blu Aire Gate to Murphy Road.
The city said the road will be reopened Thursday morning.
People in southern Huron and Lambton counties are being told to limit their time outside.
