Fire destroys chicken barn near Arkona

A fire Tuesday at a chicken farm resulted in approximately $2 million in damage.

Firefighters from Forest, Thedford and Arkona responded to the structure fire at around 3 p.m. in the 8800 block of Birnam Line, southeast of Arkona.

Warwick Fire Chief Brad Goodhill said they also responded to the blaze with tanker and man support.

"It was fully engulfed upon arrival of the first department," said Goodhill. "So it was a total loss."

He said the cause was determined to be a piece of equipment that had malfunctioned.

"Thankfully there was no loss of any animals," he said. "The building had been cleaned out and was being prepared for the next flock of chickens to go into the building."

He said the building was built about three years ago.  No injuries were reported.
